LOST Season 5

You confused yourself.

Ajira Bottle -> Sawyer group with rope stuck in ground -> Jack group returns

Although I agree with this, the Ajira bottle is surely after Jack and that return. That's where it gets confusing.

I editted my post before you replied, so it seems. I don't have that order in my post anymore.

I think part of the problem is that we can't even be sure about when the bottle flash is, either. We know that the plane traveled backward in time. So we should also understand that the rafts themselves may have also entered the Island by means of a flash (and thus, the bottles, too), especially when they came with Ajira bottles. It's important to note that the Island is very difficult to be reached by normal means at sea.

It would seem that the person who rafted to the Island could very well have flashed there to a time before or after the time to which the Ajira plane flashed. My ideal guess would be that Desmond rafted down there and out-of-convenience managed to make it to a timeline that allows him to catch up with the rest of the O6. It would effectively make it irrelevent to when he decides to leave the outside world and would reinforce the "recreation of original events" in two ways:

-Desmond still goes to the Island by sea
-Desmond still gets there before the Oceanic survivors

The final question, though, would be why there is another raft.

I think that just raises bigger questions:
1) How Desmond got there in only 36 hours without any real idea where it is?
2) Why would Desmond use a raft when he has a boat?
3) Why Desmond would want to go back?

Also bear in mind, they only had to recreate the flight as close as possible- Desmond got to the Island three years before them, and so probably doesn't need to be on the flight.

Ahhhh, crap. Forgot about the 70 hours thing...or however long they had.

Yeah, good input. I guess it wouldn't make sense if he has a boat already, so my idea doesn't seem to work. Though I would figure that him going back would at least be for Penny's sake if Ben actually killed her.

I think you could be on to something. It couldn't be coincidence that Desmond was in on the conversation with Eloise. He heard where the island would be.

Ben kills or seriously injurs Penny and destroys their boat and Desmond finds a new boat/canoe and works his way to the portal into the island to seek out Ben.

They've made it overly clear that he would never want to go back—so much so that it makes it pretty likely in my opinion that he'll end up going back. It's not like him and Penny are going to live happily ever after. Desmond will be back on the island eventually.

Yes. The only impractical thing there is him canoeing to the island and beating them by plane. I think it would make sense for him to go back to Eloise, who would then have a secondary way of him getting back to the island.

Seeing as how we now know what the Ajira bottle is and where it came from (the plane hat was just shown in this episode) I'm going to guess that next episode is when we finally understand how it came to be there.

I'm guessing that when Sawyer found the bottle it was after Jack and crew landed/started exploring the island and in the next episode is when they meet up.

I know this was a few episodes back but when Jin is finally found on the island by Rousseau did anyone elses mind implode?
When she said her name was Rousseau I was like "Fücking hell! Only LOST could do this and keep their fanbase"

I actually saw it coming...and I don't follow about the fanbase. Maybe its just cause its almost 2am

Kinda destroys the emotional impact of Desmond and Penny reuniting to have her killed off-screen. Alright, they did it to Sayid's girlfriend, but no one cared about her anyway.

But this whole thing begs the question- what about their kid? I can't imagine even someone like Ben would murder a child (the fans would certainly not be pleased), so is Desmond seriously going to abandon him in Los Angeles to go and seek revenge, or take him to an Island he knows is dangerous?

Maybe he brings the child with him to the island? Penny might not have died remember. Ben could have been unsuccessful, in which case Desmond going back by himself is more plausible.

Yes, I think he was unsuccessful (he obviously ran into trouble to get himself a broken arm and a messed-up time schedule). And if that's true, why it make it more plausible for Desmond to go back at all? He's stated on no uncertain terms many times that he never wants to go back there.

I get the feeling Desmond isn't going back, but will instead remain an off-Island character, so the writers still have a way to interact with Widmore, Hawking and any other characters who aren't on the Island. Remember, he doesn't necessarily have to go back to the Island again to be a part of its plans (remember Michael?).

I said it would make him going back by himself more plausible, because he wouldn't be leaving his chil, as previously mentioned.

But that doesn't make much sense. Why would he go back if Ben didn't kill Penny? Desmond would be the last person to willingly go back.

Speaking of which, I get the feeling Sayid wasn't exactly willing either, seeing as he was being transported in handcuffs by that woman.
