I'm not gonna go into depth over this, or else we'd be here for days, so I'll just stick to protagonists. The first impression, always important. Incidentally, this is likely the most fatal flaw. The biggest problem with FF7 was that it was most people's first RPG. Doesn't sound so bad at first, since they had to start somewhere. But if so many people's introduction to the entire RPG genre was this:

This melodramatic, pretentious, flashy, androgynous, overcompensating porcupine with the personality of a plank of wood. What would people then expect RPG's to be like from that point on? What's that? Oh hi, Tidus, I didn't see you there. And of course, we have all seen the influence this has had on other gaming protagonists, beyond RPG's. There's always some effeminate guy with a BFG who just can't remember his name and whose personal input, when existent, causes more pain and suffering than what Aeris felt upon being stabbed in the guts.

This is just one element that shows the chasm between the first six titles and 7.
