I had a similar experience, except mine was filled with pure hate and rage. I suppose it was fun, in a sadistic way. The other option was worse, since everyone would always pick Wario stadium. They'd always go for the thunderbolt so they could cause people to fall of the big ramp jump and have to start from about half way back. So then nobody would attempt the jump and everyone would just stop a few feet from the ramp until someone gave in. At least in battle mode we could actually finish a game without having everyone rage quit.

Screen peeking in general reason is why my group of friends moved to Smash and stuck with it on the N64.
I was the only one who stuck with it all the way. Quite sad.
