I can't grab the Goron when entering Death Mountain

I tried to get passed the Goron but couldn't, so I left and did Sumo training and received Iron boots. I Joust the guy on the boar to save the kid, bought the metal shield then tried again with the iron boots on. Still no luck. I'm pretty sure Im doing it right so I must be missing something else. Any tips?
