You have to exit to Wii menu in order for this progress pause to take place. A power outage would most likely erase your progress in the same way as when playing any other game unfortunately.

Gonna have to add Super Mario 2 to the collection, it is a definite classic.

Just started playing SMB2....World 2-2.....Its nice to see the lagging issues are still there....ahhhh the memories....
