thread rating system

considering people are now getting into giving out reputations, whats the deal with the ratings system for threads?

i just noticed that there were 5 stars on my thread "ask a cop" and i had no idea what it was until i saw the stars at the top of the thread that says to rate the thread.

does anyone actually use it and should it be considered to be used? i mean is it a good tool?

i see no harm in it but does it go hand in hand with reputations?
