Honestly what I'm afraid of. But it was free, so I'm not complaining.

It's more similar to Ocarina or Twilight Princess in free roam aspects, but on a larger scale world. The story is completely linear. Sidequests require some exploration but those aren't necessary to complete the game. FFVI is more non-linear than Xenoblade, by comparison.

How on Earth did you get it for free?
