just go out side to the field or go to the graveyard and wait till morning. You can buy the shield even before going to goron's mine, after the horse battle, one of the kids opens the shop, just collect 200 rupies and buy it. You can use epona to jump over the gate north kakariko, but you don't need to do that right now.
