but it would still be nice that the original wiimotes would work and they should, knowing Nintendo, they'd have researched it thoroughly.
I beleive the problem with using the rechargable batteries is when the batteries become damaged and leak. The damaged caused i've been told is worse than normal batteries and will permantly damage contacts (dependant on how much it leaks).
If you don't use them for quite a while there may be a problem but i guess you will be using them all the time at the moment.
I have used rechargable batteries in other devices that suggest not to over the last 8 years and have never had a problem. If you are worried take them out when not in use (put them on charge is the best idea) and there won't be a problem. But make your own mind up as someone said the cost of alk batts saved would be more than a new controller.
