Yeah, I've done that. However, I find that people tend to see it more often and can actually avoid it from time to time. To your point though:
One thing about mines that I think people don't do enough is to actually NOT place them on floors. Ceiling mines can be EXTREMELY effective, particularly around hallway entrances, and on darker-colored textures.
