hi, my wii is stuck in standby mode, i have tried leaving the power off overnight but as soon as i plug the power lead back in it goes to stanby, i have tried holding the power button but it only flash's between red and green, i did leave it in standby mode for about 3 days

Mine's been in standby since November 2006. That's what's it's for.

Standby mode means you WiiConnect24 enabled. You can disable that and then it will just go from on to full off if that's what you really want. This is all explained in the manual.

i bought it second hand so i dont have a manual, so how do i manage to switch it on to disable wiiconnect24

You can find Wii manuals here.

The option to turn WiiConnect24 on/off is on one of the configuration menus that you get to from the icon on the bottom left of the main screen (I don't remember exactly which configuration screen off-hand).
