Freeware u can use GIMP and if u got money to burn or "other ways" you can use Photoshop.

yes, start with gimp... there's plug-ins and add-ons, then maybe you'll know if PS is worth you paying out money...

gikoku does a great job and only uses gimp...

I would say the best way to test out Photoshop to see if it's worth your time, is to download the trial version first. You can download it over at Adobe Photoshop CS3 Trial, you'll have to register first though (for free).
