Ridley in Brawl.

Tell me, WHO could be the best Metroid representative that would be the most recognizable icon to the majority (second to Samus, of course)?...Ridley.

i don't see why a series deserves a certain amount of reps

forget about the series, and just pick the more deserving nintendo characters

i personally don't think ridley is that much of an icon to nintendo, maybe to the metroid series, but not really nintendo......

I don't feel that Diddy or Olimar are icons to Nintendo. But Hell, they are playable.

Plus, I do agree for the most part about series having deserving amounts of rep. But giving Metroid one more is only fair due to the fact that the god damned franchise has been around since the NES. And Ridley is the perfect candidate.

Ridley is Metroid's Bowser, Dedede or Ganondorf. Take your pick.

Here's my argument. I don't think that a series should get more reps simply because another series has more, IF said lacking series doesn't have any worthy candidates. If you're including a character simply for the satisfactory of having more reps from one franchise, that can lead to poor character design.

I, however, think that Ridley is deserving as the second rep for Metroid. That's why this entire debate is based on opinions, not facts...it's more of a "want to be played in the game" then "the ability to be played in the game". Or at least that's my opinion.

I think olimar and diddy are perfect icons for nintendo...

I would associate Ridley more with bowser jr or kamek than bowser

I wouldn't say perfect, but yeah, considering they're popular Nintendo only characters, I think they're pretty good icons.

I don't totally think Ridley can be compared to Bowser or Ganondorf seeing as he's never a final hurdle you have to get over before beating story mode. But, in the sense that he reoccurs practically every game in a huge franchise does make him very important, and somewhat similar.

This I don't understand.

Ridley IS the main antagonist of the Metroid series as opposed to just some henchman.

I think everyone can agree that Ridley is Brawlable. It's really a question of whether or not it should happen. That's where the opinions come into play.

Those Bounty Hunters were all good and fine in Corruption. But they didn't really do much themselves. They lasted one game and are now gone.

Ridley's lifespan has stretched across the franchise with only two Metroid games (to my knowledge) lacking his presence.

And for the record, I apologise for not being more specific. I meant I compared Ridley to Bowser or Ganondorf as he is a recurring villain. He's definitely the Metroid villain who's lived the longest. And if they see fit to keep bringing him back then he must be important for a reason.

Sakurai should really make him playable. But if he doesn't, then that's Brawl's loss. Hopefully the other newcomers will make up for it (Might have to hope for a purple Charizard and then use him)

Really? I am sure not many people knew Pit before his trophy on Melee...I for once knew nothing about him...
And I'm sure meta knight and dedede don't represent nintendo...they're in because of their importance in their series (and because Sakurai is their daddy or something).

I say it's a matter of chance by now, depending on what other characters got chosen.

some people are perfect icons for the retro nintendo, i'm sure kid icarus was a game people listed when they were telling their friends about the NES

and like i said, you should stop looking at series(i.e. metaknight and dedede), and just put all the nintendo characters together, and pick which ones would be good for smash, would you rather have a kirby with a sword or a huge dragon?

Frankly, I'm all for Ridley...mostly with the argument that Metroid could use more representation

if kirby's got 3 characters
so should metroid (never played metroid before)

I was making a suggestion as to who could be added since Ridley is such a heated topic.

And BTW, don't tell me what the topic is about as if I didn't know. Hence the title "Ridley in Brawl"

No offense, but that really does sound ridiculous. I promise you the majority of players would play a dragon rather then Kirby...a dragon. Who wouldn't want to play as a dragon? A really awesome pterodactyl-dragon on top of that. Like I said before, this isn't really a debate of "Does he have the ability to be a PC?", but rather "Do you want it to happen?" It's obvious that Ridley can be shrunk down (i.e. Melee intro), it's obvious he has potential, it's all up to Sakurai. I like the way Miyamoto said:

To state it simply, you are capable of taking a project with nothing and visualizing a completed game almost perfectly in your head. As I mentioned earlier, you and I have a long history working together at HAL Laboratory. When involved on the same project, you were able to point out the smallest details even when the product had yet to take shape. The details were so small and so specific that, as a programmer, I thought there was no way you could know what you knew without actually trying it first. As the game progressed and took shape, however, it was clear that we needed to address the details in just the way you had described. So I would ask "did you really know this right from the start?" I mean, this was over ten years ago, but I remember you said you did and I thought to myself "is this guy for real?" As it happened over and over again, however, I had little choice but to believe you. I don’t know how, but you’re able to visualize a game right down to its very details, as if the finished game is working inside your mind. If not, how else could you have been right so many times?
Sakurai could see the game's finest details a year ago, if not longer than that. He would have known back in the character development stage if Ridley was going to work, so in the end...it's one man's decision. Personally, I think he'll make it happen. If not this game, the next.

I long for the day when ridley and the words WARNING: CHALLENGER APPROACHING are in the same post on the smash bros. dojo. He would make an excellent character and I feel the odds are in his favor for his inclusion (to be honest, I would be extremely disappointed if he was anything less than a SSE boss). To those who think he's too big and that resizing would be awkward, I don't think so. True, META-Ridley from the Metroid Prime trilogy is massive. But Ridley's most popular and likely SSBB representation is his purple dragon form from super metroid (which you can see on my avatar). In super metroid, he is only about a head taller than samus. It would be a simple matter to simply resize him a TINY bit so he's just a little taller than bowser. Heck, they did it in the SSBM opening movie!
