how do i get to use special abilitys

i know just the captains have them like marios grows huge but how do i get to get them and use them and also how do i slide tackle sorry for the nub questions

When you get tackled or perform a good shot, you are awarded items. WHen you get the item that looks like your character's head, press the c button. (it is the top trigger on the nunchuck)

To slide tackle, press "down" on the d-pad on the wiimote. This only works when you do NOT have the ball.
