Thank you napalm brain. I had almost lost faith in the users :p

I'll bring out a couple more of my favorites:
A Clockwork Orange
Fargo
Brazil
Magnolia
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Dr. Strangelove
Lilja 4-ever
Requiem for a Dream
Dracula (1931 version with the greatest Dracula of all, Bela Lugosi)

Agreed, your list (and a few others) restored my faith that mixed in among the people who like to see stuff get "blowed up" there are a few real fans of film. When people ask for lists of must see or greatest, I usually ask: of all time or semi-contemporary?

These are movies I'd consider must see at some point - classics of cinema. They're all over the place thematically. Seriously, if you like film, you should make a point of seeing every movie on this list.

Many of these defined a genre, or at least [re]defined something about film making (whether from a writing, directing or technical perspective).

I'm missing some stuff - this is a pretty fun thread, so I might go back and do a separate Top 10 of like SciFi, Noir, etc.

So, off the top of my head, in no specific order:

Raiders of the Lost Ark
Citizen Kane
Terminator
The Road Warrior
Blade Runner
Jaws
The Matrix
Streetcar Named Desire
Star Wars
Brazil
The Godfather I/II
Schindler's List
Dr. Strangelove
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Psycho
Chinatown
Blood Simple
Pulp Fiction
Platoon
Casablanca
Sunset Boulevard
Ran
2001: A Space Odyssey
Rashomon
Raging Bull
The Shawshank Redemption
The Unforgiven
300
Pan's Labyrinth

And in general most work from Martin Scorsese, Kurasawa, P.T. Anderson, Charlie Kaufman, Kubrick, the Cohen Brothers, F. Miller, just to name a few!

Mallrats- Favorite Jay and Silent Bob movie. Truly hillarious.

The Last Samurai- Im not a big fan of Tom Cruise movies, but this action filled masterpiece of a movie is one of my favorites
