Theres a edit button for a reason

Editing an existing post does not mark it as a new message. So if you read the original message and then come back later and the message was edited, you won't see that indicated as a new post and therefore won't read it.

Agreed. Within a couple minutes there should have just been an edit. But I've seen people complain about double posts when the two posts were hours or even days apart.
