Hi, I've noticed this past year my computer has significantly slowed down in speed. Does anyone know any tips I can try, I am searching up Google but they don't seem very helpful.

Also my computer does not turn off properly. I.E. I click Shut Down, then it says "Saving Settings", then it does that and reaches the black screen. After the black screen it stays there and I can move the mouse. To turn it off I would have to push the power button for about 10 seconds. This has occured for hte past month. Anyone have any help on this topic too?

I own a Windows XP Home Edition, Pavilion PC. Had it for about 3 years and warranty ran out which means I can't get over the phone help either. Some one please help me!

this has been happening to me, it has shut down numerous times for no reason also, sorry, but i am also clueless as to what to do.

You should definitely run defrag, and if you don't have an anti-virus/spyware/adware program you should definitely get one and wipe all the nonsense you probably have built up. Also might want to run disk cleanup to remove temporary files, and the like. Hopefully this helps some, otherwise I haven't a clue either.

Yes, I have all that antispyware crap and anti virus stuff. I would also like to ask what de-fragging does? Does it delete any important files such as pictures?

Reboot your computer and while rebooting, press "F8" often as you go thru the rebooting. Until you reach a new screen where you can select to restore previous working settings on your computer.

This works for me...........

Defrag, compresses old files, and essentially frees up space, it may remove old unused files, but besides that it doesn't mess with pictures, as far as I know. Actually, I just checked, my defrag is scheduled to run every week, and it just reorganizes files so your computer doesn't have to work as hard to run normally.

Run disk clean up and have it delete temporary internet files, I'm sure if it hasn't been done in a long time there will be a long in there.

Defrag does not delete anything..........
However fragmented files are de-fragmented and restored to preferred working order.

From Wikipedia:
In the context of administering computer systems, defragmentation is a process that reduces the amount of fragmentation in file systems. It does this by physically reorganizing the contents of the disk to store the pieces of each file close together and contiguously. It also attempts to create larger regions of free space using compaction to impede the return of fragmentation. Some defragmenters also try to keep smaller files within a single directory together, as they are often accessed in sequence.

What about my shut down problem, I think that those things just speed up your computer... Besides only about 1/4 of my computer space is used up...
