Can't play online with more than 1 player?

I really hope I just don't know how to do this... can someone tell me if it's possible to play with more than 1 person online (on the same wii)? I've tried almost everything I can think of to try to get me and my roommate online to play other people, but I can't figure out how to get the 2nd player in.

Once you enter the room, have player 2 press start (or the equivalent, depending on your control scheme). This will bring them into the game.
Only works in games with friends.

Ah... well that's why, seriously, did they really have to limit that to just games with friends? That's ridiculous.
