Two Player Online?

I was trying to do two player online last night with a buddy of mine and we couldn't figure out how to do it. Can you do two player "Brawl" with a friend online? Also, I tried searching this forum and couldn't find anything.

what i found out is in order to have 2 people play online on the same console you must go to "with friends" mode and make your own room. you cannot join another persons game with 2 people on the same console. only the host of the game can have friends on the same console
