Can everyone just use your forum names for SSBB?

Can everyone just use your forum name or some abbreviated version for your SSBB name? How am I supposed to tell apart the 3 Johns on my friends list? Seriously. Also, this way, we know who we're playing and can talk about matches and such here better than with some random non-forum-associated name.
