Luongo unhurt in training camp collisions
Cleve Dheensaw, CanWest News Service
Published: Thursday, September 13, 2007 VICTORIA — That's it people, season's over. Goodbye and drive home safely, or so it appeared as the Vancouver Canucks opened their training camp Wednesday morning.
Forward Jeff Cowan almost delivered the hit heard around B.C. when he slid in and collided heavily in the crease with superstar goaltender Roberto Luongo — the team's franchise player.
Both went down in a heap but were OK. Then it happened again later when veteran forward Trevor Linden also slid in roughly and brought Luongo down hard. No one was worse for wear you could imagine the worst-case scenarios racing through the minds of Canucks management and fans.
"I thought he (Cowan) took a page from the playbook of the Anaheim Ducks," quipped Luongo, referring to some of the rugged play in last spring's second-round playoff series.
"But knowing how to protect yourself in certain situations is part of the game. You make it so you're protected when something like that happens. You don't put yourself in a vulnerable position. You try to make sure you take a collision head on and not sideways, where you can fall over awkwardly on a knee or something."
Cowan, who also collided with rookie forward Juraj Simek during a drill, had a rough day of it in the first of two sessions as the 48 players in camp were split into two groups.
"I'm just glad I didn't hurt him (Luongo)," winced Cowan, who had seven goals and three assists in 42 games last year.
"At least I wasn't the only guy. It happened a couple of times," Cowan added with a chuckle.
"I think I heard the coach (Alain Vigneault) yelling 'go to the net.' It's good to get it going right off the bat in camp."
The Canucks' second training session, featuring the second group of players, was scheduled for later in the day. Camp continues Friday and Saturday and concludes with the annual Blue-White intra-squad game Sunday at Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre.
The Canucks then hop on a ferry and open their eight-game exhibition season Monday night at GM Place in Vancouver against the defending Stanley Cup champion Ducks.

Some Canucks News:
"Taylor Pyatt played the hero for Team Blue scoring a pair of goals in the third period to lift his side to a 4-3 at the annual intra-squad game Sunday at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre in Victoria.
Alex Burrows and Alexander Edler scored the other goals for Blue while Jeff Cowan, Juraj Simek and Brad Moran tallied for team white.
Pyatt’s third-period outburst was overshadowed by a Brad Isbister one-timer late in the first period that caught goaltender Roberto Luongo up high.
Luongo lay face-down on the ice for more than a minute, and was escorted to the dressing room by trainer Mike Burnstein. Luongo did not return.
"Lui has been in this condition before," said coach Alain Vigneault. "We've seen it before in the past, it's just part of the game. He'll be fine in the morning."
Sami Salo also left the game after jamming his wrist and will get x-rays, while Trevor Linden left the game with a pulled groin.
Cory Schneider upstaged fellow Team Blue goalie Julien Ellis - who had an outstanding second period - stopping Cowan and Jozef Balej in the final minute to ensure the win.
The Canucks play their first exhibition season Monday night against the Anaheim Ducks at GM Place."
