Wifi 3rd party USB, query, assistance required :)

Hi guys

This is a really stupid query, but here goes, a guy at work gave me this USB Wifi dongle to connect my laptop to the wireless connection at work.
Could it be made to be used like a Nintendo Wifi-USB adapter? I ask as I don't have a wireless connection at home. Or is this item merely a client only to receive a Wifi signal?

In order for any usb adapter to work, you need to have an internet connection connected to a wireless router in order for the usb adapter to pick up that wifi signal.

There are cards out there for laptops that receive internet from satellites but they're overly expensive and not very fast.
