Just thought this was a useful tip that I could not find the answer to and had to figure it out:
After downloading and beating super mario bros I noticed that the beetles kept appearing even after I reset the game, not allowing me to go back to the original. So deleting the save file in the wii memory for super mario bros reset it back to normal.
