Sending stages

ok, so i had a problem sending custom stages to a friend, he finally got them, but it used points to send. unfortunately i sent the same thing several times to make sure he got it. so i lost a lot of points. how do you get points back?

it seems you a number showing how many points it takes to send and whats remaining.

Please tell me how you even got the custom stages to send. As far as I can figure out you must have a friend registered on both the Wii console and SSBB Friends list, I have friends who are on both, but no addresses show up when trying to send vault data. As for the points need to send I noticed that too, whats up with that?
What are these points and how do you get them?
