Owl Statues

What is with the owl statues? They look similar to the howling rocks but they are a little bigger and . . . I am stumped. I have beaten the desert temple so are they for something later?

I have a question about a heart piece location I am going to wrap that in spoiler for anyone who doesn't want to see a vague hint

I read that there is a heart piece in a tree in hyrule field in the norther section of Faron province- I have been to each tree and sent the boomerang all through those leaves- can anyone give me more direction?
