New LAN Adapter for Nintendo Wii

Hi guys/girls

I've have recently purchased a LAN Adapter for Nintendo Wii, this plugs into one of the USB slots on the back of my wii, i then connect the ethernet patch cable from my modem to the slot on the adapter, but then it all goes wrong. I go through the set up for connecting to the wii, but its keeps coming up with an error message and cant find a connection? why is this? any help would be great.
