Mario Party 8 Question... please help!

We just rented Mario Party 8 and cannot figure out how to add additional controllers. We get in as far as selecting the number of players. It then asks the additional players to add their Wii remotes. We've tried holding "A" down, we've tried holding "1" and "2" down like in the Wii Sports and it doesn't seem to be working. The remotes work with Wii Sports and have brand new batteries. Please help!! Thank you!

press the home button go to settings. click on reconnect.now the wii should say in order press 1+2 simulatanously.and wallla.try that out and post back here
