Is there a way of checking how much of the game you've done?

As title really, is there a way of checking what stage of the game you are at, what percentage/level for example?

Nope. Best way would be to use "temples completed" as a guide maybe.

I think that would made me slightly depressed if I knew how much more to go. Because at first there would be too much, and then too little.

yea basic set up of any zelda game is as follows, first 3 temples something happens like acquering the master sword and learning some seceret then anywerar from from 3-5 more dungeons
