How do you update your Wii......?

Let's say Nintendo comes up with some new channel for the Wii system. How would you get the update to let you get the channel?

I've heard two answers, and I'm definately confused.

1) You buy the channel from the Wii store on your console.

2) You update your Wii through Wi-Fi and the new channel is there.

both are right .. some new channels you'll have to buy thru the Wii Shop, but free channels will just show up when your Wii updates.
