Intercept a lob pass in mid air?

Every time i do lob passes, the other player is able to intercept and pass it to one of their team mates.
I have done this before, but i didnt know what i did to make it happen...

Im desperate, my losses are bucketing lol. HELP

So, pressing the D-pad doesn't work? I have no idea, maybe only jumping characters like Toad and Diddy-Kong can do it?
