Games like Zelda?

The Legend of Zelda is one of my favorite games on any console. I am wondering what games are most like it on NES, SNES, etc. First, I would be interested in those games that are already available on the VC, but I am also interested in knowing what to "look for" in the future as far as VC games go.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I would say metroid for NES actually

1. upgradeable gear
2. adventure style gameplay (side scrolling = zelda 2)
3. must utilize map and revisit areas

Thank you! And I do mean anything other than the Zelda series, which I have played all of. That being said, I liked the first Zelda the most. So, I appreciate the Metroid suggestion. I've never played that. I also like your breakdown of how it is similar. It's hard to put into a list what it is that makes it a "special" game.

EARTHBOUND , SECRET OF MANA, CHRONO TRIGGER
I think all three of these VC titles are a must-buy. Check them out to see if they 're your style. Earthbound and Chrono Trigger are turned based fighting. They're not that similar, but...they share in common their brilliance?

Secret of Mana is probably most like Zelda 1, fighting with a sword and not turned based.

Currently, I can't think of any zelda like titles on the VC.

But, in the future look for these other ones:
Willow for the NES is zelda-like. It has it's ghetto moments though. :)

Also a turbo graphix game I think it's called Neutopia or something. That game was super cool. Anyone remember that game? Let me know if I got the title right.

And if you have a ps1/2 try Alundra. It's very zelda like and fun.

DRAGONS QUEST
Like Zelda 2 only good

Landstalker for the Mega Drive was apparently quite good. It'll probably end up on VC eventually.

And I totally agree about Alundra for the PS1, that was top notch.

I appreciate the responses from everyone. Keep them coming. There are never enough of these kinds of adventure-style games. I do have a PS, but I am hoping to only have the Wii set up in the future. Still, a suggestion never hurts. Thanks again!

I know some of these have been said ,but ill put my hat in the ring here

(besides zelda games you have)

Secret of Mana (snes)
Neutropia 1 & 2 (tg16)
Crytalis (nes)
Crusader's of Centy (genesis)
Beyond Oasis (genesis)
Secret of Evermore (snes)
Soul Blazer (snes)
Illusion of Gia (snes)
Startropics 1 & 2 (nes)
Mystical Ninja (snes & 64)

then if you want to get into the 3D zelda type games you have

Beyond Good n' Evil (gamecube)
Star Fox Adventures (gamecube)

I very much appreciate these suggestions. That is a nice list to look forward to.

Secret of Evermore is tricky starting out. Once you get past the jungle stage it gets pretty good. Ogre Battle SNES, and Ogre Battle 64 are great games. Illusion of Gaia is a must get.
