Dvd???

I've looked on-line and did a quick search here, and can't seem to find an answer.

Does the Wii work as a DVD player as well as a game system?
Searching on-line, it seems like originally it didn't or wasn't going to... then Nintendo changed their mind and decided that it would... or that only some do... or you need to get an extra peripheral...?

We got one for the kids for Xmas, and I'd like to use it for DVD playback. I tried putting a movie in it this afternoon, but the disk came up as unreadable. I'm not sure if I'm just doing something wrong, or if it just won't do it.

did Nintendo ever release a peripheral for DVD playback? Seems from looking on-line that they had planned on it.
