Do I need an SD card?

Okay so I am hoping to get a Wii soon, and in the slim chances that I get a Wii, I was wondering if I actually need to get an SD card for it.

I was wondering if I put my mp3 player in Disk mode and connected it to the Wii, would it recognize it? instead of buying an SD card? or is there going to be an update where I can do that?

you don't need an SD card, it's just an extra slot for more memory if you need it. the Wii already has 512mb built into the system
