Confused about onlineability

I was under the assumption that the Wii supported online gaming. Is that something that just isn't working yet, or was I wrong in thinking that I could play games, like Wii sports, with my Nephew, online.

I won't take that the wrong way, but I have searched. What do you search for? Online? I get a bunch of posts that gripe because they can't get online. Sports? Nothing useful. Thanks for answering my question. Sorry I didn't see the question answered before mine.
