Cant send message to a friend

I can not send messages to one of my good friends. We both are in each others address book but both of our names are faded to grey and the only options we have with each other are Erase and Change Nickname. Does anyone know what could cause this?

maybe ur internet isnt working well...
make sure ur wiiconnect24 is on aswell
