I have a pretty good knowledge of PC's, but not that great when it comes to building one. I am currently building my first because my last PC burnt up. I have a case and a 500w power supply already. I pulled some prices off of newegg to get a general idea. I was hoping some of you could help me and maybe let me know if I need to get something different or additional items. I am not really a PC gamer, at the most I might play WoW, it will pretty much be us for internet, movies, and music. The list is pretty general as far as pricing and description. I haven't included monitor or OS.

Intel Processor - $40
Motherboard - $50
1GB Memory - $50
200GB SATA HD - $60
DL DVD Burner - $40
256MB Video Card - $90

A few additional notes...I'm not really familiar with the different companies (MSI, Biostar, Asus). My last VGA was by MSI, and had no problems out of it until it met its end and the fan ceased. Also I am only going to go with 1GB memory, but will probably double it in the future.

Thanks in advance.

dont know alot, but follow paintballers link, im sure hes trust worthy enough ;)

YAY finally a topic about what I do for a livin.

give me a budget and I will price you a system out, the companies you want to stick with are: asus, dfi, gigabyte, MSI, XFX, BFG, for mobos/video cards.

If you're going to play WoW you'll want a decent computer, seeing as how it is a somewhat demanding game.

2GB's is actually pretty cheap nowadays, memory companies to stick with are: OCZ, kingston, g skill, mushkin, super talent.

Building is a cinch, but the thing is, you need to make sure you have enough amperage on the 12v rail of your PSU to amply power your computer, you'll want to shoot for a dual rail with each 12v having 18A or a single rail having 18-20A.

PSU brands to stick with- OCZ, Antec, Hiper, enermax, PC Power & Cooling, rosewill.

Hard drive brands: maxtor, western digital, hitachi, samsung.

if you need further help, feel free to ask!

I'm looking for no more than $600-$700 minus OS and monitor. And of course I have the case and PS already. I appreciate it.

for the GFX card, i suggest you get the nVidia 6600+. i have the 128MB version and 1 gig of ram and can play WoW easyly. i almost never have slowdowns. the card is pretty cheap now too. i got mine over a year ago and then it was $160 so i be you can get it for about $80 or so

i personaly like AMD CPU's and nVidia GPU's better than intells CPUs and ATI GPU's but nonetheless, thats a damn find PC you got for him! one thing i would add though, Arctic Silver 5. it is heatsink greese. it is WAY better than the stuff that comes with the processer. also 1 tube will last you a LONG time. it will GREATLY help keep your CPU cool and not overheat

I'm an AMD and nvidia guy too, but right now intel is in the lead and probably will be for quite a while, I go where the architecture takes me lolz. nvidia is doing decently, but ATI has the upper hand by a few smidgents. unfortunately the thing about nvidia is their 8800 series drivers pretty muchly blow :p.

While I do know a great deal about computers and building them, I'm sure you've already gotten more than enough good advice here. However, I feel compelled to correct Spiritshotgun's fatal system requirement miscalculation.

World of Warcraft is not a demanding game, not by a longshot. It's designed to be played by the masses, as such, the requirements are actually rather low.
WOW Minimum System Requirements said:
Windows® System 2000/XP OS:

* Intel Pentium® III 800 MHz or AMD Athlon 800 MHz
* 512 MB or more of RAM
* 32 MB 3D graphics card with Hardware Transform and Lighting, such as NVIDIA® GeForce™ 2 class card or above
* DirectX® 9.0c (included) and latest video drivers
* 6.0 GB available HD space
* 4x CD-ROM drive
* A 56k or better Internet connection

Mac® OS X 10.3.9:

* 933 MHz or higher G4, or G5, or Intel processor
* 512 MB RAM or higher; DDR RAM recommended
* ATI or NVIDIA® video hardware with 32 MB VRAM or more
* 6.0 GB available HD space
* 4x CD-Rom drive
* 56k or better Internet connection
Even if we look at the recommended specs it's still far from a demanding game.
WOW Recommended System Requirements said:
Windows® System 2000/XP OS:

* Intel Pentium® IV 1.5 GHz or AMD XP 1500+ MHz
* 1024 MB RAM
* 64 MB 3D graphics card with Hardware Transform and Lighting, such as NVIDIA® GeForce™ FX 5700 class card or above
* Broadband Internet connection
* Two-button scroll-wheel mouse

Mac® OS X 10.3.9 or newer:

* 1024 MB RAM or higher; DDR RAM recommended
* ATI or NVIDIA® video hardware with 64 MB VRAM or more
* Broadband Internet connection
Pretty much any half decent computer bought these days can run WoW.

Hm.... I think I was going to build one. But finding compatible parts is hard. Assembly is easy.

I'd reccomend 2GB RAM. Corsair is another brand you can add to his list.

(I'm an Nvidia/Intel guy. Core 2 duo just owns AMD in heat and speed and price...)

Oh yeah, skip the 6600, just go straight to a 7 at least. With the 8800 out, the 7's are going to plummet.

Edit: Forgot to say ANTEC is the best case manufacturer..... They don't lie when they say they have 1000w power supplies... They are quiet and support 180 (?) mm fan slots all over the place. You will never over heat with one of those babies and 3 or 4 fans...

*ponders how much liquid cooling would cost*

Well, I'm not one to look at the requirements for the games lol, I just play em. but I don't like WoW. while we're on the subject, why the hell is it so hard to find a decent MMO? the only one I've found that I really like is ROSE online. i'd like to find some actual good free MMOs...

OMG ROSE!!! i LOVED that game during the international beta. but once they took it to the USA beta, they just made it suck. however the final p2p version is OK (played the 1 week trial) but nothing can beat the international beta (i miss my level 56 Muse :( )

Guild wars if you want free.

Just stick to FPS man. Play what the computer gives you the advantage for..

off-topic: I want Halo 2 on a computer, Xbox, and wii (or at least glovepie working) just to see the advantages of each control method.

I have guild wars, but the thing I cant stand about it is you seriously do not get very much exp for completed missions, which means it takes forevvveeerr to get to level 10 -_-.

Mitch, if you'd like to play ROSE again, I play on a private server and its 1500x exp/zulie and drops, if ya want I can link you.

I've tried silkrose, didnt like it, scions of fate was meh, theres some others i've tried too many to name lol.
