About using a proxy server....

Hey, Im at a college where they have a secure network that you must use a username and pass to gain access to the net. It is usually done on the browser on the computer, but I cant do that here (no opera yet.) I figured I could use a proxy server to connect, but when I tried I failed. Any suggestions? am i using a proxy server incorrectly? I thought that is what they were for.
