A Golden Oldie who needs help

Just bought my Wii and Zelda which I love but already I am stuck. Please could someone help this golden oldie. I am stuck in the tunnels of the Twilight Realm. I managed to climb up the spiral staircase and then got Link to jump on to a ledge which he just kept falling off. When I came back to play the game found I was back in the tunnels. I just cannot get out as he keeps dying from these black creatures which attack him. I have pulled all the chains but just cant get through the gate. If someone could help me from thread to needle I will be very grateful. The walkthroughs are fine up to a point but!!
