2 player mode?

Hey guys, well I've been having problems with adding another control onto a 4 player game. Meaning , when i try to play vs., my Wii never detects the second or any other control besides the first control. This has happened to me with more then one game, but when i play Wii Sports or Wii Play it always detects it, if anyone can give me advise or show my noob a** how to do this i would appreciate it.

press home button on remotr, point to remote menu on bottom of screen (turns blue when you point at it), click on reconnect... follow screen instructions.

EDIT: sometimes you gotta have the remotes active before launching the game.
